The Song.

The Song.

Throughout the Bold Voices project, students were immersed in everything that goes into making a music video. The first step was writing lyrics and establishing the song.

Lyrics and song production together offer queer creatives a uniquely powerful form of expression because they allow both personal storytelling and emotional atmosphere to exist side by side. Through lyrics, artists can articulate identity, desire, struggle, and joy in their own voice, often taking hold of narratives that have historically been silenced or misunderstood.

Meanwhile, production shapes how those words are felt, using sound, texture, rhythm, and space to amplify emotion in ways that go beyond language. This combination creates a layered, immersive experience where vulnerability and strength can coexist, enabling queer artists to express fluidity, transformation, and authenticity on their own terms. In this way, music becomes not just a medium, but a space for visibility, empowerment, and connection.

In a series of workshops led by songwriter and producer Phoebe Troup (Bandcamp, Instagram) students brought their ideas together, experimenting with melodies, vocals and instrumentation. From group performances, guitar toplines and synth patches, the track gradually took shape, culminating in a final piece—a truly memorable moment.

Spring became a metaphor for queer voices and coming out, symbolising growth, renewal, and stepping into your own identity.
