Prop Making.

Props and musicians’ performance choices are essential tools for bringing a song’s identity and lyrics to life. They provide a physical and visual extension of the music, allowing performers to embody the emotions, stories, and themes within the track.

Students created a series of interactive props to extend the narrative within the music video. Drawing on themes from Bold Voices, these elements brought an added layer of storytelling — tactile, expressive, and rich in personality — allowing their ideas to move beyond the screen and deepen the emotional impact of the piece.

Thoughtfully designed props and deliberate movements can highlight key moments in the lyrics, create narrative depth, and give the audience a stronger connection to the song’s message. By leaning into these elements, the performance becomes more immersive, expressive, and closely aligned with the artist’s intended story.

Props play a crucial role in music videos because they help bring the narrative to life in a way that feels tangible and visually engaging. They can act as symbolic extensions of a character’s emotions, reinforce themes within the song, and provide context that might not be explicitly stated in the lyrics.

These ranged from a light orb used to reflect and manipulate light, to a wooden box with mirrored surfaces designed to contort the body during performance. Other pieces included a latex fish, a Venetian fan, an oversized shuffle, and a birdhouse — all crafted with care and intention. Each prop holds its own narrative significance while contributing to a wider, interconnected visual story woven throughout the music video.
